Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, known in Chinese as 端午节 (Duānwǔ Jié), is one of the oldest and most significant traditional festivals in China. Celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, it is a vibrant cultural event rich with history, exciting traditions, and delicious food .
🐉 A Festival of History and Heritage
The festival is most famously associated with commemorating the ancient poet and statesman Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC) from the Warring States period . A loyal official of the State of Chu, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River as a protest against corruption. According to legend, the local people, who greatly admired him, raced out in their boats to save him. When they could not find his body, they threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent the fish from eating his remains. This act of remembrance evolved into the core traditions of the festival we know today .
In 2009, the Dragon Boat Festival was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, making it the first traditional Chinese festival to receive this honor
